Match 54: REN vs STR 

Preview 

Renegades (REN) and Strikers (STR) will lock horns in match number 54 of the Australian T20 league 2022 at the Docklands Stadium, Melbourne. STR emerged victorious last time these two sides met but nothing much has gone in their favour ever since. With 5 wins in 13 matches, the Adelaide based franchise is precariously placed at sixth in the points table. REN on the other hand have blown hot and cold this season so far. They put on a valiant display in their last game against table toppers Scorchers (SCO). The former champions are currently positioned at fourth in the league standings. 

After electing to bowl first, the REN bowlers faced the wrath of Cameron Bancroft whose breezy 95 propelled SCO to a gigantic total of 212. In reply, REN fell agonisingly close to the target and eventually lost the game by 10 runs. Aaron Finch scored an unbeaten 76 but unfortunately didn’t get much support from the other end. Shaun Marsh also showed a glimpse of his vintage self but departed soon after his fifty. In the bowling prowess Matthew Critchley and Corey Rocchiccioli picked two wickets apiece but conceded way too many runs. Ahead of Tuesday’s clash, REN will look to sort out their bowling woes. 

STR were comprehensively beaten by SCO in their previous clash. Batting first, they were bundled out for a partly score of 92. SCO chased down the total inside 11 overs, handing STR their eighth loss of the tournament. Batters will need to pull up their socks and come up with a much improved show to go toe to toe with REN, who are a formidable batting unit. 

Senior Pros Travis Head, Alex Carrey and Matthew Short should shoulder the batting responsibility for their franchise. Their bowling which has been under a lot of fire off late will have their task cut out on Tuesday. Cameron Boyce and Wes Agar will be the bowlers to keep a keen eye on.

Pitch and Weather Report

The Docklands pitch has been a good track for T20 matches, as it provides assistance for both batters and bowlers. This is a closed stadium as well, so weather won’t be an issue here. It offers even bounce, allowing players to trust the bounce and play their shots on merit. Pace bowlers can also use the bounce to their advantage. One side of the boundary is on the bigger side, but the rest of the dimensions are batting friendly.

(i) Wicket Keeper

Alex Carey- The Australian international is one of the key members of the STR squad. He has scored here and there but has failed to maintain consistency. We fancy him to come good against REN on Tuesday. 

(ii) Batsmen

Shaun Marsh- The wicket keeper batter scored a 34 ball 54 against SCO in the last game. His innings had a perfect blend of aggression and caution and he did the scoring at a brisk pace without taking too many risks. Expect the veteran to continue his good form.  

Aaron Finch- With 355 runs in 13 innings, the REN skipper is amongst the leading run scorers in the competition this year. He is coming into this fixture on the back of an unbeaten 76 against a potent SCO bowling attack. 

(iii) All Rounders 

Will Sutherland- The 23 year old is capable of having a massive impact with both bat and ball in hand. He has proven his prowess as an allrounder earlier in the tournament and don’t be surprised if he delivers yet again on Tuesday. 

Matthew Short: With 458 runs and ten wickets to his name, Short is STR’s most valuable player. He has been unarguably their best player so far and we fancy him to do well in this game

(iv) Bowlers 

Tom Rogers- He has picked 20 wickets in 13 games and looks hungry for more. Rogers is currently the third highest wicket taker in Aus T20 League 2022-23. 

Cameron Boyce- He had a good outing against SCO and ended the game with impressive match figures of 2/12. 

Match Prediction

Both teams have had an erratic run in the competition thus far. STR however has a few gaping holes that can get exposed on Tuesday. We predict REN to secure a win in this encounter.
