“Captaincy affected Jadeja’s mind”: MS Dhoni

After a very poor start in the league, news flushed from the Chennai camp that Ravindra Jadeja has handed over the captaincy back to MS Dhoni. While the fans celebrated in joy as MS will once again lead the team, very few were thinking about Jadeja. In the last two years, Jadeja has proved his mettle and became one of the most important players of the Indian team. Thus, the dip in form was very concerning and thus, MS either understood the situation and took back the captaincy or like Chennai said, Jadeja has given back the baton to Dhoni.

Chennai won comfortably on Dhoni’s return and under the vision of Captain Cool, the team will look forward to turning things upside down and qualify for the playoffs. Now, interestingly, Dhoni in the post-match conference said that Jadeja was well aware of the fact that he will lead Chennai this year. Despite getting some time to prepare, Jadeja couldn’t handle the pressure of leadership and eventually failed to perform on the pitch. “Between me and Jadeja, he knew last season itself that he will be given a chance to captain this year”, said Dhoni in the post match conference.

He added, “So he knew about it, and got enough time to prepare. What's important is you want him to lead the side. I wanted that transition to happen so the first game and second game there was a bit more information going into Jaddu but after that I left it to him because at the end of 5-6 (games) or the full season, you don't want him to feel that the captaincy was done by somebody else and I was just going for the toss”.

The captain also shed some light on why Jadeja handed over the captaincy. “What's important is once you become the captain, you have to take care of a lot of things and that also includes taking care of your own game and with him his mind was working a lot and it's not easy to control your mind, it's the strongest feature. Once the mind starts working, it doesn't really stop. So what really happens is the individual is not able to relax”, said Dhoni.

Dhoni finally explained what went behind the scenes and why they have come to this decision. “What I felt was it was having an effect on his game. When he was going into bat or when it comes to his preparation he is putting this burden which is affecting his game because I would love to have Jadeja as a bowler, as a batter and a fielder. Even if you relieve captaincy and you're at your best that's what we really want because we were also losing a great fielder, we are struggling for a deep midwicket fielder. We have dropped 17-18 catches and it's a matter of concern”.

Chennai fans are happy to see their team winning again but they are happier to see their Thala back leading the side. He has a very tough job in his hands as the team is 9th in the table but if anyone can, you know it has to be Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
