Match 26: FCG vs. BFC

Preview

Former Shield champions Goa is all set to challenge former league winners Bengaluru in a thrilling encounter at Athletic Stadium, in Bambolim, on Saturday. Neither of the teams has set the tournament on fire thus three points is very crucial in order to gain some momentum to go further into the tournament.

After losing all of their three matches previously, Goa thrashed East Bengal in the previous match by 4-3. While the attacking line is boosted after that, the defensive line feels the exact opposite of that. East Bengal wasn’t scoring a lot of goals previously and thus conceding three against them has definitely raised some questions.  The team has conceded 11 goals in the tournaments so far and the coach might bring Dylan Fox in place of Ivan Gonzalez to stabilize the defense. Airam Cabrera and midfielder Brandon Fernandes will once again not be in the playing XI and that is bothering the Gaurs up front. Coach Ferrando is going through a tough time as a coach as his plans are hardly taking any shape.

Even after facing Bengaluru, who lost their last couple of matches, Goa aren’t the favourites and their coach agrees to that. In the pre match press conference, the Spaniard said, “In these matches, there are no favourites, every team wants to win the games and have the capability to win it. The games are crazy, you’ve seen the results: 6-4, 3-4; so, there are no particular favourites. Personally, the more important thing is the players, they need to work as a team, which they did in the last game, and it was a pleasure to watch them play like that but as a coach, I can see that the players are working hard which is the most important thing for me and I’m thinking about the next match. Favourites are not favourites, trust me, this moment is going to be difficult”.

While speaking about his defense, the coach said, “Be it defense or attack, the responsibility lies with the entire team. We decide to press as a team, we decide to close the gaps as a team. It’s not only the job of the three centre-backs or left-backs or right-backs or the keeper to defend, no, it’s everybody’s responsibility. Of course, we need to put more attention in some details because we need to work on our style. The most important part is the press, when the press isn’t good - when we do not have coordination in the press - then it’s difficult for the last line of defense”.

Bengaluru on the other hand have just not been good enough. Their owner Parth Jindal promised everyone of a new Bengaluru this season but that’s nowhere to be seen.  A lot of key players are out with injury and Sunil Chhetri hasn’t been in his normal form. Alan Costa has been their defensive wall yet the team conceded 10 goals this season. Prince Ibara might return from injury but may not start the match. The team needs to stick together in this difficult time and hope Chhteri, out of nowhere pulls a trick to change the fate of the match.

After losing their last two matches, Bengaluru coach Marco Pezzaiuoli in the pre match press conference said, “The energy in the team is positive, but it doesn't help that we are not getting the results, especially since we are in a bubble. We are investing a lot but the important thing is the three points. In life, you don't feel good every day. You have a few bad days and that's the same in football. It's not easy to be at a high level for 90 minutes”. He added, “We beat NorthEast 4-2, and since then our opponents have had fewer chances in each game. Hyderabad had a half chance, and they scored. We had three or four chances and didn't. This is an area we have to work on. We need to improve to get more chances and score more goals. It's a team effort, and we're working towards it”.

Speaking about Goa, the manager said, “Goa didn't start well, but apart from their first few results, and their playing style it's very good. They showed a bit of weakness in their first few games, and we have to make the most of our chances”.
