Liverpool reaches agreement with PSV to sign Cody Gakpo 

Liverpool have defeated Manchester United in the race to sign Dutch International Cody Gakpo after agreeing a deal with PSV, the Dutch side confirmed the news on Monday. 

As per the sources, the transfer fee of the deal is close to £37 million and that the side are close to finalising his arrival in the January transfer window. The value of the deal was not disclosed by PSV, but general manager Marcel Brands said it will be a “record transfer” for the club. 

The Dutch club issued a statement affirming the news. "PSV and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement on the proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo. The 23-year-old attacker will leave for England imminently where he will be subjected to the necessary formalities ahead of the completion of the transfer."

Gakpo, 23, emerged as one of the brightest stars of the Qatar World Cup by scoring three goals for his national side before they were eliminated by eventual champions Argentina in the Quarterfinal. 

With Colombia international Luis Diaz certain to miss the remainder of the season after aggravating a knee injury during a midseason training session in Dubai, Liverpool have stepped up their efforts to fortify their front line by signing Gakpo.

The young prodigy was a top target for Leeds and Southampton, and Man United, who entered the race late were almost certain of signing the left sided forward in the summer window. They have been eyeing a renewed move for Gakpo in January after the club’s decision to terminate Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract in November. 

Having already beaten United once during the signing of Darwin Nunez earlier this year, Liverpool are now set to complete a double over their rivals by sealing a move for Gakpo when the winter transfer window opens on Sunday, January 1.
