Liverpool humiliate Manchester United to move top of the table

Ralf Rangnick’s Man Utd were ripped to pieces by Liverpool at Anfield, as their apparent lack of effort left a lot to be desired on a subduing night against their rivals. The match was a testament of why Klopp’s men are rated so highly. They were the better side coming into the match and they played like one. Liverpool were everything that Man Utd were not- ruthless, clinical, passionate, co-ordinated. It was evident as early as the second minute what kind of night it was going to be . Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson used his first touch to swivel past Fernandes and coolly pass out to his defence.

It set the tone for the game: United inelegant and startled in Rangnick's reshuffled 5-4-1 formation with Phil Jones as a third centre-back while Liverpool was courageous and confident.

Luis Diaz scored five minutes into the match before Mohamed Salah added a second in 22 minutes. Both the goals were crisp and well-constructed -- two things that have looked unfamiliar to Rangnick's players.

Man United could hardly find another blue shirt, let alone create anything of substance. As they knocked the ball around during a delay to the start of the second half, each completed pass was cheered loudly by the opposition fans.

You know it's bad when your fiercest rivals are laughing at you. More sarcastic applause followed into the second half when the visitors finally had a shot during a brief spell where they looked slightly competent, but a goal from Mane and another one from Salah sealed the game for ‘The Reds’. That’s a 9-0 aggregate if you take the 5-0 annihilation at Old Trafford in consideration.

Former United player and present pundit Garry Neville called this defeat as the lowest point for them in the last 42 years. He further took a jibe at the team and deemed them a ‘waste of space’. Roy Keane went a step further and said “ These boys get the managers sacked for fun". The club has not won any major tournament since 2016’s FA cup victory and now are even struggling to be in the top four. Players on the field are just not good enough and it would be interesting to see who all get a second shot
