Match 71: MCFC vs. NEUFC

Preview

After a steady and solid start, the Mumbai express was derailed as Des Buckingham’s side managed to collect only two points from the last five matches. The defending champions are 5th in the table at the moment and will take on NorthEast after 15 days since their last match day against Bengaluru. NorthEast on the other hand has been really poor this year. It is because of their foreign players; the team suffered the most. In the majority of their matches, not all players were available because of various injuries. After finishing in the top 4 last season, Coach Khalid Jamil needs to do some kind of trick this season. The highlanders are currently 10th in the table with 9 points from 13 games so far.

The 34-year-old, Marcelinho has joined the Highlanders after Camara has decided to leave the club. The Brazilian is the all-time highest goal scorer of the league and with him in the front, the Highlanders are expected to play attacking football. They are definitely missing Apuia in the middle of the park. The former Highlander will dawn Mumbai’s shirt tonight and will be looking to create havoc in the midfield. The 24-year-old Patrick Flotmann in the defence will be a very key player for the NorthEast tonight. Mumbai has some blockbuster names in the attack and in order to stop them, NorthEast defence needs to be extremely careful.

Speaking about their last game against Odisha, their manager Khalid Jamil said, “Everybody tried hard. We missed some chances. We tried, but we were unlucky against Odisha”.

When it comes to Mumbai, the club has signed a brand-new forward in the name of Diego Mauricio. Now, people who followed the game closely last season know how dangerous the striker can get. Mauricio was remarkable last season and was also Odisha’s leading goal-scorer. In a tournament when Mumbai is struggling to convert those chances, Mauricio will be key for Buckingham’s side. He will be partnering with the legendary Igor Angulo. Angulo has already made his mark for his new side and he has scored 8 goals and assisted twice in the league.

Amidst all these attacking threats, the club is suffering because of their defence. Time and time again, the club is failing to play against the pressure. Mourtada Fall, the captain of the ship needs to be really careful in the backline.

Speaking about their recent struggles, the coach said, “I mentioned it at the start of the season, it’s about putting ourselves in a good position. We won the first five out six games and played some wonderful football. The last four or five games I feel we played good football but couldn’t manage to win. We are still in a good position. So, with nine games to go we have to make sure we finish the season as strong as possible”.

Speaking about their game against NorthEast, the coach said, “I watched their last game. I was impressed with how they played and I feel they should have got something out of the game. You can certainly see the impact their foreign players have. We are going to look for this to be one win out of the nine games we have left. We are going to take each game one by one”.
