New Zealand T20 League

1st Match: NOR vs CAK

Preview

A brand new season of the Super Smash League is about to begin on Friday, 23rd December 2022. The first match of the tournament will be between the Braves and the Kings. Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui will host the inaugural game.

Both teams clashed for the last time in the final match of the previous season where the Braves won against the Kings to be crowned the champions for the third time in the history of the tournament. This clash will be an interesting one as the Kings will be hungry for revenge against the champion side.

Undoubtedly the Braves were the best team last season and were the deserving ones for the title. They completed their league stage at the top of the table, losing just one of their fixtures.

The top-order batters were in excellent form for the Braves in the previous season and delivered the team with many good starts. Colin de Grandhomme was the best batsman from the side scoring 240 runs in just 10 games. Katene Clarke and Tim Seifert were not too far, as they also smashed 239 and 228 runs respectively.

Michell Santner was again in amazing form with his all-around performance. Unfortunately, he didn’t play for the whole season but of course, saved his best for the end as he went on to hit 92 runs off just 40 balls in the finals. He also picked 8 wickets with an economy rate of just 6.66.

The top wicketkeeper from the side was Joe Walker who had 16 wickets to his name. He was assisted by Scott Kuggeleijn and Anurag Verma. Tim Southee and Ish Sodhi claimed three wickets apiece and were contributory in ensuring a win for the Braves.

The Kings are also a good side with quality players. They won their first trophy of the New Zealand T20 League back in the 2005-06 season. Since then, they failed to get their hands on the silverware. They are a bit on the unlucky side as they managed to reach the finals in the previous two seasons but were defeated by the opposition by huge margins.

Chad Bowes and cam Fletcher are their batting stars from the last season. Bowes scored 33 runs while Fletcher registered 305 runs and were the 3rd and 4th on the chart of the highest run-getters for this edition of this tournament. The only problem is they received very little help from other players in their team.

Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls and Cole McConchie all managed to get good starts but failed to build an impactful inning. Henry Shipley picked 18 wickets in the previous season and is the top all-rounder within the team. He is also the top wicket-taker in the tournament along with that he scored 144 runs in 8 innings. Ed Nuttall and Matt Henry also took wickets at daily intervals but went a bit expensive in the whole tournament.

In an overall review, the Kings would need a bit of development in their top-order batting if they want to go all the way and win this season.

Match Prediction

CAK are a strong side but they come into this match with four consecutive losses against NOR. If the players win that mental battle then they would definitely win this game. The Knights will have the home advantage and have an excellent record on this ground. That is what makes the CAK the favourites to win this match.
