New Zealand tour of Pakistan

PAK vs NZ, 2nd ODI

Preview

The Hosts will be taking on the Kiwi team at the National Stadium in Karachi for the second ODI match on 11 January 2023 (Wednesday). Pakistan will be feeling very much high on confidence after having registered an impressive 6-wicket victory against NZ in the opening ODI encounter of the 3-match ODI series.

The Babar Azam-led side has now taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. On the other hand, The Black Caps will also be aiming to make a strong fightback both in the batting as well as bowling departments to level the series on Wednesday.

Chasing New Zealand's target of 256 runs, the start of the Pakistani team was nothing special and Imam-ul-Haq returned to the pavilion after being dismissed by Bracewell in the sixth over.

However, after this, captain Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman took the innings forward and played an important partnership of 78 runs. During this, Fakhar also completed his half-century. Bracewell dealt Pakistan another blow by dismissing Zaman for 56 before the two extended the partnership further.

At the other end, Babar also completed his half-century and shared a 60-run partnership with Mohammad Rizwan to take the team's score past 150. Babar became the victim of Phillips by scoring 66 runs in the 37th over.

Even after Babar's dismissal, Pakistan did not make much difference and Sohail along with Rizwan brought the team close to victory by sharing a 64-run partnership in 51 balls.

Sohail was dismissed in the 45th over after scoring 32 runs in 23 balls but in the end, Rizwan and Agha Salman sealed the victory for Pakistan without losing any additional wickets. Rizwan scored 77 off 86 balls while Salman remained unbeaten on 13 off 10 balls.

Earlier in the first match, the New Zealand team got off to bat first after losing the toss and in the very first over, Naseem Shah bowled Devon Conway for a score of zero and gave the first blow. After this, Finn Allen played some sharp shots but Mohammad Wasim did not give New Zealand a chance to recover by dismissing him.

Captain Kane Williamson along with Daryl Mitchell tried to take the innings forward after the openers were dismissed within 50 runs. But Mohammad Nawaz and debutant Usama Mir dismissed both of them and dashed New Zealand's hopes.

New Zealand's middle order made some contribution but due to a lack of big partnerships, the Kiwi team could only manage 255 runs losing 9 wickets in 50 overs. There was not a single half-century from New Zealand and Michael Bracewell was the most successful batter with 43 runs. On the other hand, Naseem Shah was the most successful bowler from Pakistan with five wickets.

However, we might see one change in the New Zealand side, Shipley is likely to be rested for this match and Matt Henry or Ish Sodhi will get the opportunity to feature in the second match. Pakistani team is likely to play with the same playing XI.

Pitch Report

The National stadium Karachi pitch is considered a high-scoring and flat track, but effective bowling can control the run flow which we have seen in the first ODI between both sides. The Karachi pitch has long been regarded as one of the best batting surfaces on Pakistani surfaces. The average first-inning score for this pitch is 250-255 runs which also favours the bowling team on most occasions on this surface. The pitch is quite flat and provides little to no aid to bowlers, whether seamers or spinners.

The weather forecast for Wednesday, January 11, for this encounter, calls for a warm evening to be followed by pleasant weather with a maximum of 27°C and a low of 13°C with 67% humidity and a wind speed of Light, 13 Km/HR SE on the match day. There is no chance of rain throughout the entire day or in the hours before the game.

Match Prediction

The all-around performance from the Hosts in the first ODI against New Zealand sealed them a 6-wicket victory. With the positive performances from Captain Babar Azam, Rizwan, Naseem Shah and others have given their side a 1-0 lead in the 3-match ODI series. The 2nd match of the series will be taking place in the same venue and Pakistan will be looking to seal this match as well to go 2-0 up in the series. Whereas, Williamson and co will be looking to bounce back in this match and level the series 1-1. But we say Pakistan will be the favourite to win this match as well.
