Rahul Dravid believes that flexibility is key to win the T20 World Series
Dravid is impressed with Venkatesh Iyer, says flexibility is key for T20 World Series
Team India has registered a fantastic win over the West Indian side as they whitewashed the Caribbean in both T20Is and on One Day Internationals. There were a lot of positives from the series and the team wants to bank on that and are looking forward to building a core team that will help them win the T20 World Series in October. A lot of new players have been brought in recently and the team is giving everyone the chance to show their skill and they are making a pool of 21 players who can be ready to take the field at any given point.
Coach Rahul Dravid doesn’t want any particular idea or philosophy in the T20 format. He wants the players to be flexible and for that the team might do some experiment in the series against Sri Lanka as well. “We need to have a certain amount of flexibility in T20s and that has been communicated to the players”, he said to the press.
The former Indian captain added, “You cannot be predictable in T20 cricket. You need to have the left-right combinations sometimes. We have told the players that they may be moved around and they have responded well. Certainly in the middle-order, we want to improve. Especially batting first, we need to have a good total and sometimes you need to have that flexibility when you want to take down a particular bowler. You need to have the right people batting in a really short game”.
The coach was also very impressed with Venkatesh Iyer and his ability to adapt in the given condition. He was full of praise for the all-rounder as he said, “He (Iyer) has had a very good series. We had given him clarity about what we want. He plays a slightly different role for his franchise in Kolkata, but we told him what we expected from him. There was no place in the top three, so we challenged him by giving him a different position and he has been improving. His bowling is coming along quite well too”.
Venkatesh Iyer is in a direct competition with Hardik Pandya for a spot in the team. Now, it’s been quite some time since Hardik played any International or domestic match. The all-rounder has also skipped the Ranji tournament and now will directly play in the Indian T20 League. Hardik was part of the team during the T20 World Series at UAE. He was supposed to play as an all-rounder but he couldn’t because of his injury. Now, with Venkatesh Iyer in the mix, Pandya needs to step up and show his class once again.
