Shami, Hooda uncertain for SA Series; Iyer may come in

Mohammad Shami’s return to the international circuit is set to be further delayed. The Indian speedster has not fully recovered from the Covid infection that kept him out of the recently concluded series against Australia. Now, concerns are raised over his availability for the three T20I series against the Proteas. Deepak Hooda is another player who is uncertain for the forthcoming series. The right handed batter who is currently down with a back injury was not available for Sunday’s decider against the Aussies.

Shami has not travelled to the venue (Thiruvananthapuram) for the first game where the Indian team reached on Monday evening. Umesh Yadav, who was named Shami’s replacement, has travelled with the team, a strong indication that he will get an opportunity in the three-match series too.

It is understood that there is still no official word or decision on whether Shami will be fit to travel with the Indian side to Australia for the World T20 Series. There is no medical update about the time that will take for him to be fully fit but currently it does not look good," a source in the know said. Shami is one of the standby players selected for the World T20 Series. Shami has not played a single T20I after the last World T20 Series in UAE.

Hooda, meanwhile, has suffered a back injury and the Indian Cricket Board confirmed the news when they addressed the issue during squad announcement for the third T20I against Australia in Hyderabad on Sunday.  An official statement on Sunday read “Deepak Hooda wasn't available for selection for this game owing to a back injury."

It is now found out that Hooda’s injury could be needing the aid of the National Cricket Academy’s medical staff. He has also not flyed to Thiruvananthapuram and Shreyas, who was included in the team as a standby, could potentially replace Hooda in the series.

However, there is no immediate information if there will be changes to the World T20 series squad. The Indian team will fly to Australia on October 6 after the South Africa series concludes in Indore on October 4.

India will play their inaugural game of the showpiece event on October 23 against arch rivals Pakistan

India squad for South Africa T20Is: Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Dinesh Karthik (wicket-keeper), R. Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel, Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav and Shreyas Iyer (likely)
