Poor cricket from Sri Lankans helped India beat them by 62 runs

Did jet lag play a role in Sri Lanka’s misfortunes in the hands of Indians? Well, this is what the cricket fraternity is talking about as the Sri Lankans played some poor cricket in the first T20I against India. Nothing worked for them in the middle and they will look to start fresh at Mohali. India, on the other hand, has ticked a lot of boxes last night. Ishan Kishan’s and Shreyas Iyer’s form being the highlight of the match as well as Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Venkatesh Iyer picking 2 wickets each.

Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan had a tremendous opening partnership. Sri Lankan bowlers were no threat to them but unfortunately Rohit was dismissed at 44 by 32 deliveries. Shreyas Iyer and Kishan then took charge of things and helped India get to a good total. Kishan was dismissed at 89 but Iyer stayed at the crease till the end with 57 runs from 28 deliveries. Interestingly, Ravindra Jadeja came to bat in the 2nd down position instead of Sanju Samson.

India’s 199 was more than enough as the Lankans couldn’t put any pressure on the Indians. They were 60 for 5 at one stage and things were looking really bad for them. However, Charith Asalanka showed some strength and scored 53 while Karunaratne and Chameera scored 21 and 24 runs to help them reach 137 runs. There was no competition in the middle as the Indian bowlers looked very strong in comparison to the Lankan batters. They need to change a lot of things in the second T20I otherwise Rohit Sharma and co. will walk away with another title in their hands.

After the match, Captain Rohit Sharma in the post-match press conference was asked regarding his decision to send Jadeja at number four to which he replied, “Very happy with Jadeja’s return. We want more from him that is why we asked him to bat higher. You will see that happening more and more in the games that he plays for India. I want him to bat up the order more”. The captain added, “He is a very improved batter, so we will try and see if we can promote him going forward. We are very clear with what we want to achieve with him in white ball cricket”.

Captain was full of praise for Ishan Kishan as well. He said, “I have known Ishan for a long time now. I know the mindset he has. I know the ability he has as well. It was just about getting the kind of game that he had today. It was so pleasing to watch from the other end. The way he constructed the innings was so good, that is usually a challenge for him. We were talking in the middle about finding gaps”.
