The countdown begins for the World T20 Series 2021!

As soon as the Indian T20 League came to an end, people immediately shifted their eyes for the World T20 series as not many days are left for that to start. India will face their arch-rivals Pakistan to kick start their campaign and will also face New Zealand, Afghanistan and two other qualifying nations.

It is very important for the men in blues to win the tournament this time around. The legendary last won an International trophy back in 2013 and ever since the trophy cabinet is blank when it comes down to International trophies. The players have come close on multiple occasions but always felt short. Their recent defeat in the hands of New Zealand in the finals of the test championship raised a lot of questions and the pressure of not winning a World Series in 8 long years is always there.

After a lot of this and that, the board announced the 15-men squad. The likes of Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel and Shreyas Iyer failed to get a call-up while Ravichandran Ashwin will make his comeback to white ball cricket after a long time. The inclusion of Hardik Pandya has also raised a lot of eyebrows as the all-rounder might not bowl in the entire tournament following an injury. Thus, Shardul Thakur has been added in the squad to replace Hardik if required.

India will play a couple of warm-up games before they take on Pakistan on 24th. They will take on England on 18th of October and Australia on 20th of October. This is the perfect time to check the permutation and combination of the team. Virat Kohli previously said that he will open for team India but now with KL Rahul back into his role as an opener; Kohli might just have to drop himself. He might have to bat at number four as Suryakumar Yadav has been playing in the number three position for a long time now. It’ll be an interesting thing to see whether the captain comes out to bat at number three or sends Yadav to build the innings.

Another thing that the Indian team needs to sort out is which are the bowlers that will feature in the playing XI. Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah will definitely play. As the second and third pacer, Kohli has Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami and Shardul Thakur. Now, even after being the most experienced one among these, Bhuvi might get dropped as Shami and Thakur have been fantastic for the team in the recent past.

When it comes to the spinning department, Ravi Ashwin might just get picked ahead of Rahul Chahar, who’s been in terrible form. Ashwin himself is not in a great form but now with Dhoni as a mentor, expect Ashwin to flourish and make a difference.

This World Series will be special for King Kohli. This will be the last time he will lead team India in the t20s. Now, if reports are to be believed, the board might just remove him as a white ball captain only. Thus, Virat will be charged up and when things are charged up, everyone knows what Virat Kohli can do. Ultimately, he is being called a King for a reason!
