Maxwell earns Test recall following Head's hamstring injury

Australia’s Travis Head is the latest addition to the spate of injuries in their camp. The southpaw has been ruled out of the fifth ODI against SL with a hamstring injury and might not be available for the upcoming test series. Ace all rounder Glen Maxwell has been called in as backup within the test squad.

Head sustained a low-grade hamstring injury while fielding in the fourth ODI of the series.

"It's a bit more of a precaution, especially with where he fields," Aaron Finch said in the press ahead of the final ODI. "He fields in the outfield and the ground is quite heavy and he does a lot of Ks... I'm not sure what he'll be like for the Tests but he's definitely not available for tomorrow."

Glen Maxwell last played a test match five years ago, against Bangladesh in Chattogram, and can likely return to the playing XI at Galle, specifically given the side injury to Ashton Agar. Maxwell will however have to fight for his place with Mitch Marsh and Josh Inglis.

The likes of Marcus Harris, Nic Maddinson and Matt Renshow are also in the test squad. Meanwhile, Jon Holland, Todd Murphy and Matthew Kuhnemann will also stay in the subcontinent to help with the Test match preparations.

The first match of the Test series starts on June 29 in Galle.
