Virat Kohli decides to step down as T20I captain

India skipper Virat Kohli has recently announced that he would step down as the T20 international captain after the upcoming World Cup in UAE. Reports also suggest that Rohit Sharma is set to take over captain’s band after Kohli’s resignation. However, the BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal had clearly denied such reports calling it ‘rubbish.’

But Kohli’s revelation has certainly shocked the cricketing world as he cleared that he wants to concentrate on Test and ODI cricket. But, the 32-year-old will continue playing in the shortest format of the game as a batsman.

Kohli himself took to Twitter and posted a statement thanking his players for supporting him during his journey at the helm in T20Is. “I have been fortunate enough to not only represent India but also lead the Indian Cricket Team to my utmost capability. I thank everyone who has supported me in my journey as the Captain of the Indian Cricket Team. I couldn’t have done it without them – the boys, the support staff, the selection committee, my coaches and each and every Indian who prayed for us to win,” Kohli wrote.

“I feel I need to give myself space, says Virat Kohli”

Virat Kohli further stated in his statement that he discussed the decision of stepping down with his close people like coach Ravi Shastri and compatriot Rohit Sharma before arriving at the conclusion. He also cleared that he will continue to serve Indian cricket as he has been doing over all these years.

Kohli has not been in his best form recently. He has not been able to score a single half century since India’s tour of New Zealand. What Kohli has done is quite justifiable as he can concentrate more on the longer format of the game and improve his performance by reviewing his techniques.

Virat will still be leading Bangalore in the Indian T20 League 2021. Hopefully the decision works well for him and we might very well witness the same old century scoring poacher back at his best.
