World Cup 2022

Group G, Match 16- BRA vs SER

Preview

Brazil is entering this World Cup in Qatar as the only country in history to have qualified for every tournament since the first season back in 1930. Just after that, they made a record-breaking CONMEBOL qualification campaign. They collected more points (45) than ever, winning 14 matches, and drawing three of their 17 games.

The Selecao never really struggled to qualify and rarely had problems in the group stage over the years. They are unbeaten in their previous 15 World Cup group stage fixtures. The last loss in the World Cup came against Norway by a 2-1 margin, back in the year 1998.

In spite of all these amazing streaks, Brazil has failed to get their hand on the World Cup for the sixth time, since the last time they lifted the trophy 20 years ago in Seoul. Now all pressure is on Tite’s talented squad, which is ranked No.1 by the World Football Federation. Fans will hope that this time the men in green-yellow will stand up to their expectations and try to live up to the pre-tournament hype. The last time they lost the quarter-final round was four years ago against Belgium.

Serbia will be the first country in the World Cup to put the star-studded Brazil team to the test, but obviously, the Selecao are gushing with confidence ahead of the inaugural clash on Thursday. Brazil currently has a 15-game unbeaten streak across all competitions and their last seven games have an aggregate score of 26-2.

Brazil has won both of their previous encounters against Serbia without conceding a single goal. The last time Tite’s squad lost a game was against their arch-rivals Argentina in the Copa America final.

Serbia crashed out of the group stage at their last three World Cups since their independence in 1990. This time they have an optimistic view towards reaching the knockout rounds for the first time in Qatar. Earlier this year, Dragan Stojkovic’s side was promoted promotion to the League A of the European Union’s Nations League, all thanks to four wins and a draw in six matches. The loss against Norway in June by a narrow 1-0 margin was one of the two losses they suffered in their last 16 international competitions.

Serbia’s performance on European soil has been remarkable, but now taking it to the global stage is the seemingly impossible task that Stojkovic and co are now assigned. There cannot be a more formidable spect than facing the five times World Champions’ Brazil in their first fixture.

Serbia has won only two of their last nine World Cup matches losing the other seven. They have just one loss away from Australia’s record of eight defeats. They need to be more confident as a team if they want to pull off an upset like Saudi Arabia and Japan did in this World Cup.
