Australian T20 League 2022

Match 35: HUR vs STA

Preview

Hurricanes and Stars will be crossing swords in match number 34 of the Australian T20 League 2022 at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart on Monday, January 9. The Canes lost their previous clash against the Gades by 6 wickets. With three wins in eight matches, the Hobart-based franchise is placed sixth in the league standings. Stars on the other hand find themselves at the bottom of the table with only two wins in eight matches. They lost their most recent game to the Sixers.

Nothing has gone in HUR’s favour this season. They have been all over the place and are consequently at the bottom half of the table. Their senior pros Matthew Wade, Ben McDermott and Riley Meredith have failed to perform consistently. While Mcdermot apart from that fiery half-century against Brisbane, has had a sluggish tournament, Wade has been relatively better and has got a couple of good knocks to show for it.

In the bowling prowess, no one other than Patrik Dooley has been able to create an impact. Dooley with 12 scalps is the Hurricanes leading wicket-taker in 2022-23. Riley Meridith is the other bowler who has been amongst the wickets but has been a touch expensive.

Stars are languishing at the bottom of the points table and the possibility of them going through the next round is slim to none. A season which began with a slender loss has just gone from bad to worse for the Melbourne-based franchise. They lost their previous clash against the Sixers by 6 wickets. Batting first Stars posted a competitive total of 173. Thanks to Marcus Stonis' pyrotechnics down the order.

The Aussie allrounder smashed a 28-ball 52 to propel his side beyond the 170-run mark. However, the bowlers were below par on the day and as a result, failed to defend the total. Ahead of this enthralling meeting Zampa and co will need to sort out their bowling woes to induce a favourable outcome.

Hot Fantasy Picks

(i) Wicket Keeper

Ben McDermott: Ben McDermott has been one of the Aus T20 League's most reliable batters in recent years. However hasn't had the best of seasons so far, but he is known for his prowess as a potent hitter at the top of the order.

Joe Clarke: The wicketkeeper smashed the only century of the 2022-23 Aus T20 League against this bowling attack earlier in the tournament.

(ii) Batters

Zak Crawley- The top-order batter has looked good in recent matches. Expect the English international to do well in this fixture.

Thomas Rogers- The opening batter looks in good nick. He is coming into this match on the back of a well-compiled 48.

(iii) All Rounders

Marcus Stoinis- Stoinis scored a whirlwind 50 in the last game. Expect the explosive all-rounder to continue his good run with the bat in hand.

(iv) Bowlers

Luke Wood: With 14 wickets in 8 matches, the lanky medium pacer is amongst the leading wicket-takers in the tournament.

Match Prediction

Hurricanes have a better head-to-head record against the Stars and looking at the current form, we back Canes to get the job done.
