Brazil surrenders against Argentina World Cup Qualifications at Home

Previously, Brazil had never played at home in the World Cup Qualifiers. However, that neat record has now been tarnished. Even more bitterly, the team that beat them was their rival Argentina. Brazil hosts Argentina at the Maracana on matchday 6 of the 2026 World Cup Qualifications in the CONMEBOL on Tuesday. The Brazil vs Argentina match ended with a score of 0-1 thanks to the goal courtesy of Nicolas Otamendi.

A tough first half, the deadlock was only broken in the 63rd minute when Argentine defender Otamendi scored the opening goal for Argentina. The Selecao, who lost Joelinton after being shown a straight red card in the 81st minute following a foul on Rodrigo De Paul, were unable to equalize. Brazil was forced to admit the superiority of the 2022 World Cup champions. The defeat to Argentina was Brazil's third defeat in the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers. This defeat was also the first home defeat in Brazil's history in the World Cup Qualifiers. However, it was their only second defeat at home in 70 years and both came against Messi's Argentina.

Argentina made history by becoming the first team to win at home to Brazil in the South American zone (CONMEBOL) World Cup Qualifiers. Before this, Brazil had never lost at home in World Cup Qualification. In 64 home matches, they have won 51 times and drawn 13 times (W51 D13 L0). However, this unbeaten record was broken in the 65th match, against his rival too.
