Kieron Pollard announces retirement from Ind T20 League; named Mumbai’s batting coach

Kieron Pollard, arguably one of the icons of the Indian T20 League, has called curtains on his decorated career. The Trinidadadian, signed by Mumbai in a secret bidding war in the 2009 auction said “Once a Mumbaikar, always a Mumbaikar”.

“It hasn't been the easiest decision to make as I will keep playing for a few more years, but I understand that this incredible franchise which has achieved so much needs to transition and if I'm no longer to play for Mumbai then I cannot see myself playing against Mumbai either," Pollard said in a statement on Tuesday morning, just hours before the Indian T20 League 2023 retention deadline was to end.

The club said he will remain with the team as its batting coach and will continue as a player for Mumbai Emirates, the franchise’s subsidiary in the UAE T20 League. Pollard led Mumbai in nine games across seasons. He has been a vital cog in Mumbai’s successful run in this competition.  The 35 year old was retained by the franchise for INR 6 crores last season in which his performance was below par, particularly with bat in hand scoring only 144 runs in 11 innings.

"Right from Season 3, we have shared joy, sweat, and tears - those powerful emotions that forge lifelong bonds on and off the field. He has played an important role in the success of MI and been a part of the winning side for both our Champions League trophies and all 5 Ind- T20 League wins.

"We will miss seeing his magic on the field for Mumbai, but I'm delighted that he will continue to play for Mumbai Emirates, and also mentor young players as the batting coach for Mumbai. May his new journey with Mumbai and Mumbai Emirates bring him even greater glory, triumph, and fulfilment. I wish him all the very best!," Nita Ambani said.

Akash Ambani added, "Polly leaves behind a huge legacy as a player with Mumbai. Fans roared every time he took to the field. A valued member of the Mumbai family and a great friend, he played the beautiful game of cricket with utmost commitment and passion all through his Indian T20 League career with us. Pleased to have Polly continue to be a part of the Mumbai Family as a batting coach for Mumbai and as player with Mumbai Emirates.
