A late, late drama helped Manchester City clinch their 6th Premier League trophy!

The Premier League and its rich history of drama, romance and suspense was once again on display as Manchester City and Liverpool were fighting their hearts out in the penultimate match of the season. Ilkay Gundogan’s brace and Rodri’s goal within 5 minutes changed the complexion of the match as Manchester City won the Premier League title for the 6th time in their history. Liverpool made a late comeback against Wolves but their win is insignificant with City’s win.

The fans at the Etihad were shocked and were in disbelief when their team was trailing 2-0 in the 70th minute. Matty Cash scored the opener for Aston Villa while former Liverpool Player of the year Philippe Coutinho made it 2-0 in the 69th minute of the match. The comeback looked very tough but with Gundogan’s introduction in the match, the dynamics changed. The German scored his first in the 76th minute while Rodri brought City into level terms and Gundogan completed his brace in the 81st minute to seal Manchester City’s fate as the new champions of England!

Liverpool for much of the time was in level terms with Wolves but Mohammed Salah and Andy Robertson’s late strike helped the UCL finalists to win at Anfield. Despite Mohammed Salah’s goal, the Egyptian couldn’t finish as the highest goal-scorer of the tournament as the Korean; Hueng-Min Son became the first Asian player to win the Golden Boot in the Premier League. With 23 goals by his name, Son made history and everyone looked very happy with his achievement.

In other matches, Burnley went down to Newcastle United while Leeds United managed to get a win over Brentford. With Burnley, Watford and Norwich City playing the Championship next year.

Manchester United also suffered a blow when the team lost to Crystal Palace on the final match day. The team was lucky to note that Brighton defeated West Ham by 3-1. If the result would have been otherwise or in West Ham’s favour, Cristiano Ronaldo and company would have played the Conference League in the next season. Horrifying, Red Devils?
