Lionel Messi becomes the most decorated player with Argentina’s 1-0 win in Copa America Final

The Argentine star player Lionel Messi added another feather to his cap after winning the Copa America for the straight second time. This time La Albiceleste defeated Colombia 1-0 in the final of the 2024 edition of the tournament on Monday, July 15. With this Messi became the player with the historic milestone of 45 trophies with both club and country, surpassing his ex-Barca teammate Dani Alves's record. His journey from a small-town boy in Rosario to the most decorated player in football history has been a story that will inspire millions for generations to come.

Before 2021, Messi had been at the centre of criticism due to his lack of international silverware, instead compared to that of his arch-rival Ronaldo’s two major trophies, notably the Euro and the Nations League. Since the beginning of the 2021 season, the world witnessed Messi at his lowest point in club football when he had to leave his beloved club Barcelona following a feud with the club's management and join PSG, where he suffered from his poor form still winning three trophies during his time at France.

But that was the time when he shined with Argentina in the international circuit. He lifted the Copa America first followed by the Finalissima in 2021, next the most prestigious one, the World Cup in 2022, and now again the Copa America in 2024.

In his illustrious club career, Messi has won four Champions League, and ten La Ligas with Barcelona. He also has stunning individual records of a record eight ballon d’Ors and six Golden Boots. He has accumulated a total of 1,212 goals and assists in 1,068 games, comprising 838 goals and 374 assists.

La Pulga’s journey has not been without challenges, as he led the Argentine National Team against Colombia, who were on a 28-match unbeaten streak, in the Copa America 2024 final. Despite his hard try, he was subbed in the 64th minute of the game following an ankle injury. This time, Argentina played for their leader and his presence in the game could be felt throughout the match. La Albiceleste demonstrating their grit determination and resilience pushed the game into extra time. Lautaro Martinez’s stunner in the 112th minute of the match ensured a 1-0 win over the James Rodriguez side. Lionel Messi’s talent, passion, and excellence in every edge of the game, solidify his status as a true legend and the greatest ever to have played the game of football.
