Alex Carey set to make his test debut

Alex Carey looks determined to replace Tim Paine as Australia’s wicket keeper for the forthcoming Ashes against England and is set to make his much awaited test debut, as more bad weather on Wednesday ruined practice sessions for both the sides. A week before Tim Paine quit test captaincy and stepped away from cricket over a text message scandal. The entire incident came as a huge shocker to the cricket fraternity and the Australian Cricket in a difficult position. Regardless of Paine’s call, the board would have anyway axed him from playing cricket for some time. They were under tremendous pressure to act and we believe Paine’s sudden decision came as a blessing in disguise.

Tim Paine’s sad exit has opened doors for other young Australian glovemen. Alex Carey and Josh Inglis were the two names that were widely seen as in a clash for the role and the decision was expected to be made based on their performance in a scheduled three day intra-squad match. The first day of the match at Perth was washed out on Wednesday and reports suggest that Inglis returned back home. The Sydney Morning Herald stated the 30 year old Carrey has been ‘given the nod’, corroborated by broadcaster ABC which said he was the first choice to replace the experienced campaigner.

Alex Carey has been a part of Australian Cricket for quite some time. He has represented them in the limited overs format but has never played the 5 day format. With Wade and Paine out of the mix, it would be interesting to see how the exciting southpaw cashes onto the opportunity. Ashes 2021 will commence from December 8 at Gabba. Both Australia and England will be eager to make a strong start to this illustrious showdown.
