All Dues Settled: Barcelona squandered a huge 148 million euros on Ousmane Dembele
Renowned sports journalist Fabrizio Romano has assured that all outstanding bonus payments related to Ousmane Dembele’s transfer from Borussia Dortmunf to FC Barcelona have now been fully cleared.
Surprisingly, the total amount paid to the German club has reached a staggering 148 million euros.
It must also be cited that the Catalan Giants signed Dembele during the summer time in the year of 2017 when the young French winger was only 20 years old. The initial transfer amount was 105 million euros, with an extra 40 million euros in probable add-ons.
The deal was mostly funded by the 222 million euros that Barcelona received from the French giants Paris Saint-Germain after triggering Neymar’s buyout clause.
For many years, Dembele’s transfer was noted as one of the worst transfer investments Barcelona has ever made. This was only due to his customary relationship with injuries and inconsistent performances.
Nevertheless, the award for the most unproductive signing later shifted to the Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho, who cost the Calatan side even more than Dembele and delivered less on the field.
The high amount Barcelona had to pay for Dembele was partly due to Neymar’s departure. Dortmund was aware of Barca’s financial gains and accordingly raised their asking price.
The five-time Champions League winner mediated to 90 million euros for Dembele. However, when the Brazilian forward left, they were forced to agree to a much-hiked price of 105 million euros plus multiple other performance-based bonuses.
Some of these bonuses were pretty easy to meet. For example, Barca had to 5 million euros each time they played in the Champions League, which they did twice when Dembele was playing for the Blaugrana club. Also, Dortmund fetched 5 million euros each time Dembele reached 25 game appearances for the Catalan giants.
As of the present, when Dembele left the club more than a year ago, Barcelona have settled all the existing debts owed by the German side. Now after these many struggles, Barcelona has finally improved its financial condition and their tale of expensive transfers has finally ended.
