Harry Maguire's diving header guided Man Utd beat Copenhagen by 1-0

Scott McTominay was included in the starting XI in Manchester United's last two matches. Interestingly, in those two matches, the Scottish midfielder committed a blunder which resulted in the Red Devils being awarded a penalty. The Red Devils have just finished their third matchday match in Group A of the 2023/2023 Champions League against FC Copenhagen. Playing at Old Trafford, on Tuesday, United won with a score of 1-0.

The Red Devils' winning goal was scored by Harry Maguire in the 72nd minute. The 30-year-old defender broke United's deadlock after heading home the ball from Christian Eriksen's pass. Maguire and Andre Onana were important actors behind United's achievement of three points. Meanwhile, Scott McTominay almost brought United down. Erik ten Hag's troops almost fell into the abyss in the 90+5 minute. Starting from a corner kick situation, referee Marco Guida pointed to the spot. Manchester United was awarded a penalty. The penalty was given after McTominay committed a foul on Elyounoussi. This moment happened so fast, that Elyounoussi wanted to control the ball, but McTominay's foot was too high and hit Elyounoussi's body.

United players tried to protest against Marco Guida. However, the Italian referee was unmoved. The Red Devils were still awarded a penalty and McTominay received a yellow card. This is not the first time that Scott McTominay has committed a blunder that resulted in Manchester United being awarded a penalty. Last weekend, when United met Sheffield United in the Premier League, McTominay also punished United with a penalty. McTominay plays handball in the penalty box. The referee also gave United a penalty. Oliver McBurnie then successfully converted the penalty into a goal. Before making a mistake which resulted in a penalty, McTominay scored a goal and put United 1-0 up. This match ended with a score of 2-1 for the Red Devils.

At the start of the season, Scott McTominay had difficulty getting playing minutes. The 26-year-old midfielder was unable to compete with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen. The arrival of Sofyan Amrabat means that McTominay's playing minutes are increasingly minimal. However, the match against Brentford was a turning point. McTominay scored two goals from the bench. After that, McTominay was included in the starting XI in United's last two matches.
