Arnautovic's goal secure a win for The Nerazzurri
Hosts Inter beat Atletico in the first leg of UCL clash
The Hosts Inter Milan managed to beat Atletico Madrid in the first leg of the last 16 of the 2023/2024 Champions League at the Giuseppe Meazza on Tuesday, 20 February 2024. Even so, Henrikh Mkhitaryan reminded La Beneamata not to be complacent because there is still a second-leg match and the Nerazzurri won narrowly with a score of 1-0.
The first half ended in a goalless draw, but Inter was finally able to ensure victory thanks to Marko Arnautovic's goal in the 79th minute. Next, Atletico Madrid will host Inter in the second leg at Metropolitano Stadium on Tuesday (12/3/2024). Even though the Italian club won, Mkhitaryan still reminded his teammates not to be convinced by the result. The 35-year-old midfielder emphasized that a 1-0 victory does not guarantee that his side will qualify for the next round as they need to be more disciplined for their visit to Spain.
"We still have another game to play, 1-0 doesn't mean anything even though the win is nice," Mkhitaryan said in an interview. "We created as many chances as possible to try to score, but we knew that we were playing against a strong team who played and defended well." Atletico is quite dangerous when appearing at home, the Armenian midfielder also demanded that his side not slack off in their performance in the second leg. "We go to Madrid with a lead but we have to play to win again as if we didn't score tonight," continued Mkhitaryan. "We have to do our best to continue last year's path; we want to reach the final again."
