Axar Patel ruled out of Rajkot ODIs

India’s all rounder Axar Patel has been ruled out of the third and final ODI against Australia. Patel, who is said to be dealing with a left quadriceps strain, had been conditionally included in the squad for the Rajkot ODI. He hasn’t fully recovered to be a part of the outfit and is currently going through rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

Axar’s unavailability could be a blessing in disguise for Ravichandran Ashwin, who has been called in as the left arm spinner’s replacement, could potentially get a chance to represent India at the World Series. Ashwin has put on impressive performances in the opening two ODI, claiming four wickets and, more importantly, displaying top notch bowling skills that have apparently caused quite a few headaches to the Australian batters, particularly during the last match in Indore on Sunday. This has possibly opened the gates for his selection in the World Series squad. However, as per the sources within the Indian Cricket Board, Axar, who was selected ahead of the veteran spinner, is on course for a return to the Indian Cricket team well in time for the marquee event.

According to sources Axar could be ready for the World Series warm up fixtures. This could put the chief selector, Ajit Agarkar in a serious quandary. However, at this instance, Ashwin’s prospects appear encouraging.

Shardul, Shubman rested

The National Selectors have granted rest to two of their key players- Shubman Gill and Shardul Thakur for the final game.

The team will however be bolstered by the addition of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who were handed rest for first two games of the ongoing three match series. Jasprit Bumrah, who was rested after the series opener in Mohali and didn’t fly to Indore, is believed to rejoin the team in Rajkot for the final game.

The selectors will have to submit a final 15 player squad for the World Series by September 27. India and Australia will travel for Rajkot on Tuesday afternoon. The hosts lead the three match series 2-0
