Casemiro's late header sends United into QF; slated to face Liverpool
Manchester United set to face Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter final
Arch rivals Manchester United and Liverpool are set for a smashing FA Cup quarter final clash after both sides made it through their fifth round matchups on Wednesday.
The two giants were paired with each other in Wednesday’s draw, but the fixture was only confirmed after Man Utd narrowly defeated Nottingham Forest and a young Liverpool side battered Southampton.
Elsewhere reigning PL champions and FA Cup holders Manchester City will host Newcastle United
Eight time champions Chelsea will take the field against Championship leaders Leicester City and Wolves are set to host Coventry City.
It is the clash between 12-time winner Man United and eight-time champions Liverpool that will be the highlight of the ‘quarter final’ round, however, United left it very late to confirm their berth, with Casemiro’s header resulting in a 1-0 win over Forest.
The Reds, despite a long line of injuries, made light work of Championship unit Southampton, triumphing 3-0.
Defending champions City secured their place in the final eight with a comprehensive 6-2 win over Luton Town, in which ace forward Erling Haaland became the first top-division player to net five goals in an FA game since George Best smashed six for the Red Devils against Northampton Town in 1970.
Coventry, presently ninth in the Championship, are the lowest-ranked team remaining in this season’s competition after getting the better of sixth-tier Maidstone United in the fifth round.
The quarter finals are scheduled over the weekend of March 16.
