David Warner named Delhi skipper; Axar Patel to serve his deputy
David Warner to lead Delhi in Ind T20 League 2023
Flamboyant Opening batter David Warner will lead the Delhi side in the absence of regular skipper Rishabh Pant in the Ind T20 League 2023. Left arm spinner Axar Patel, whose batting has improved significantly over the last few months, has been appointed Warner’s deputy for the season.
Pant, who suffered a horrific car crash in late December, will miss the entire season as he continues to recover from his acute injuries.
The wicket keeper batter is highly unlikely to return to competitive cricket anytime soon and is expected to miss both the World Test Championship (WTC) final and the 2023 ODI World Series in India.
Meanwhile, Warner who has already led Hyderabad to championship in 2016 was the obvious choice to lead Delhi in 2023.
As a skipper, the southpaw has registered 35 wins in 69 matches in the Indian T20 League. On the batting front, he has scored 5881 runs in 162 games at an average of 42.01 and a strike rate of 142.09. He has also won the Orange Cap thrice during his time with Hyderabad.
