This is why Delhi will play their home games in Vizag
One noteworthy observation from the first batch of the Indian T20 League 2024 matches, for which the schedule was released by the Indian Cricket Board on Thursday, is that Delhi play their opening two games in Visakhapatnam. This surprising move has caught the eye of Ind T20 League viewers, particularly considering that Arun Jaitley Stadium is a customary Ind T20 League venue.
In the recent development it has been learnt that the Indian Cricket Board opted not to schedule matches in Delhi due to issues over potential wear and tear on the wicket, given it is also hosting Women’s T20 League fixtures, including the Eliminator and the final, are both to be held at this ground. Both the Indian Cricket Board and the franchise expressed unpredictability regarding the ground condition after 11 back to back matches.
The Women T20 League fixtures are slated to be held in Delhi from March 5 to 17. The tournament kicks off on February 23 (Friday) at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.
"We felt it necessary to allow the ground some respite following the WPL matches," said an Indian Cricket Board official aware of the decision making process. Various sources familiar with the situation have confirmed the news that Delhi will later schedule their remaining five league matches at their designated home ground i.e. Arun Jaitley Stadium.
The decision to move the games to Visakhapatnam was made by the franchise and it was confirmed by the Indian Cricket Board. "Having chosen to play their first two home matches in Visakhapatnam, Delhi will first host Chennai on Sunday, 31st March in the port city and will then face the Kolkata Knight Riders at the same venue on Wednesday, 3rd April," the Indian Cricket Baord said releasing the schedule.
