England vs Australia T20I

2nd T20I: ENG vs AUS

Preview

The visitors, Australia successfully drew the first blood In the first match of the 3-match T20 series on Wednesday(11th September) at Southampton. The Aussies defeated England by 28 runs after posting 179 runs on the board, in reply the Hosts, England could manage only 151 runs. The second T20I match is scheduled at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom on Friday(13th September).

After winning the toss, England decided to bowl first. Jamie Overton, Jacob Bethell and Jordan Cox made their T20 International debut for England. Australia started their innings in a thumping way and accelerated 86 runs in the powerplay. The number one T20I batter Travis Head and Matthew Short gave a blistering start to the Visitors and as a result, Australia posted 179 runs. In response, the England team was reduced to 151 runs in 19.2 overs, the Aussies won the first T20I match by 28 runs and took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

The left-handed batter Travis Head's bat roared fiercely, he played an innings of 59 runs with the help of 8 fours and 4 sixes while facing 23 balls with a breathtaking strike rate of 256. Apart from him, Matthew Short scored 41 runs in 26 balls, which included 4 fours and 2 sixes. At the same time, wicket-keeper batter Josh Inglis scored a crucial 37 runs for his side. Skipper Mitchell Marsh failed to showcase his class in the first T20I match and scored only two runs.

For England, Liam Livingstone bowled brilliantly. In 3 overs, he took 3 wickets for 22 runs. Apart from him, Jofra Archer and Saqib Mahmoud got two wickets each, while Sam Curran and Adil Rashid took 1-1 wickets. When England's team came out to chase 180 runs, the Hosts had not got a positive start and both the openers went to the pavilion cheaply. The debutant Jordan Cox could score 17 runs facing 12 balls, hitting three fours. Liam Livingstone played an innings of 37 runs in 27 balls, but Josh Hazlewood got the better of him and sent him back to the pavilion.

Apart from him, no other English batter could do anything special for them and the whole English side bundled up for 151 runs in 19.2 overs. Sean Abbott got three wickets for his side by conceding only 28 in 3.2 overs, while Josh Hazlewood and Adam Zampa took two wickets each. Xavier Bartlett and Cameron Green took 1 wicket each.

It is going to be a big challenge for the Hosts England in the second T20I match as they have to produce something special in their batting order in the absence of Jos Buttler, who is currently injured and former number T20I batter David Malan, who just announced his retirement from the International cricket just before this series. Talking of this, Australia now has beaten England in the last two T20Is without any muddle and they are unbeaten in the last four T20Is matches. The Aussies will be aiming to make it 2-0 against the three Lions on Friday.

ENG and AUS have faced each other 25 times in this format. Of these 25 matches, AUS has won 12 whereas ENG has come out victorious on 11 occasions. Their 2 games ended without a result. It will be a great test for Aussies as well when they play in front of action-packed English spectators.

Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom is not the pitch that as a batting side you would prefer, With six of the nine T20Is at this venue being won by the team fielding first. With that record, both side's skippers will be keen to the crucial toss, and bowl first and put pressure on the opposition by taking advantage of the damp deck.
