Erik Ten Hag defends Andre Onana following his dismal show against Galatasaray
Erik Ten Hag to speak to Andre Onana after his torrid display for Manchester United in the Champions League fixture against Galatasaray
United frittered away their lead twice as they ultimately lost 3-2 to Galatasaray in a Champions League group stage fixture at Old Trafford on Tuesday. Goalkeeper Andre Onana had yet another appalling outing as he conceded his seventh goal in only his second UCL game for United. His careless pass resulted in Caremiro being sent off as the former Real Madrid man was forced to make a tackle on Dries Mertens inside the penalty box. The subsequent spot kick was not converted by Maurco Icardi, but he did make amends by scoring the winner a few minutes later. After the match, Ten Hag said that he would personally speak to Onana but still praised him as a “great goalkeeper”
Addressing the media after the dismal performance of his goalkeeper, the United boss said: “I have to talk with more players, but I also have to talk with Andre of course. I will and I will back him, because he’s a great goalkeeper."
The Cameroonian international has had a difficult time adjusting at his new club as he has now yielded 18 goals in 10 appearances since joining Man United from Inter Milan in the summer. ETH is optimistic Onana will bounce back, though, as he added: “We already have seen in games his great capabilities, also his personality after he made mistakes. He will bounce back and I am sure he will in the coming games as well."
United will face Brentford next in the Premier League on Saturday, prior to the international break.
