First Time in India that a Test Match has been called off due to Rain
After persistent rainfall, officials called off the Test match on Friday. With that, the fifth and final scheduled day is also being cancelled without a ball being bowled.
It is the only eighth time when a Test match has been abandoned without any play because of rainfall. The first match cancelled was in the year 1890and the most recent one was nearly 26 years ago which also involved New Zealand.
The Blackcaps hosted India on December 18, 1998, which was abandoned on Day three because of continuous rain at the Carisbrook Oval in Dunedin.
The Greater Noida region has been receiving rain for more than a week now and the ground staff at the Greater Noida Sports Complex struggled to make the ground suitable for play.
It was Afghanistan’s third cricket test series in 2024, followed by a one-off match against Ireland and a 10-wicket loss versus Sri Lanka. The team will now play three ODIs against the Proteas in the United Arab Emirates starting on September 18.
New Zealand, on the other side, will now play a two-Test series in Sri Lanka which will also start on September 18, before flying back to India for playing against the two-time WTC finalists in a three-match Test series in October.
