Former India legend backs Gambhir for the head coach position
Ex-Indian cricketing legend Gautam Gambhir has expressed his thoughts on coaching the Indian senior cricket team in the future. He has also received stringent backing from another World Cup-winning coach to take over the Head coach position from Rahul Dravid. The present Indian coach has informed the management that he will not reapply for the post. Hence, the World T20 League 2024 will be Dravid’s final assignment as the head coach for the World’s No.1 T20I side.
Several veteran cricketers including legendary captain Sourav Ganguly and former Indian opener WV Raman have come in support of Gautam Gambhir to succeed Rahul Dravid in the new role. Also, ex-Indian coach Lalchand Rajput led MS Dhoni and Co. to a historic World T20 League win in the inaugural edition and feels that Gambhir should be the next head coach of the side.
“Gambhir is experienced and has played in the sport the hard way. He reads the game well and is a no-nonsense guy,” Rajput stated.
Also after guiding Kolkata to their third Indian T20 League trophy, Gambhir’s position to become the next head coach strengthened. The deadline for submitting the form for the head coach position ended on May 27 but it is quite unclear whether the Kolkata mastermind has applied or not. For any cricketer, the chance of coaching the senior team would be a lifetime achievement in his career.
“Kolkata franchise was the same as last year, yet he made his impact. He is also a shrewd tactician. Given his extensive experience, including two World League titles as a player, he would undoubtedly add tremendous value. While he is a strong candidate, the decision ultimately rests with the Indian Cricket Board and who they choose. Nonetheless, he appears to be the right person to lead Indian cricket forward,” continued Rajput.
