Girona and Real Madrid share 48 points each on La Liga points table

The difference in points between Real Madrid - Girona and Barcelona in the 2023/2024 La Liga standings appears to continue to widen. Now, Barcelona has to bite the bullet in fourth place, 10 points behind its two rivals.

The competition in the Spanish League this season is quite interesting. Unexpectedly, Girona emerged as a dark horse which proved to be quite consistent and could be called a potential champion. Most recently, Gironistes performed impressively to beat Atletico Madrid with a score of 4-3. At the same time, Real Madrid narrowly won over Mallorca with a score of 1-0. Girona and Madrid win heated competition at the top. Real Madrid is currently leading, but their points collection is the same as Girona (48). So, Barcelona is now in fourth place with 38 points. They have to win if they want to stay involved in the championship race.

Girona dramatically succeeded in beating Atletico Madrid with a tight score of 4-3 in the La Liga 2023/2024 weekday 19 match which took place at the Estadi Municipal de Montilivi on Wednesday.

The match has only been running for two minutes, and Valery Fernandez has managed to put Girona ahead. Alvaro Morata scored a goal to equalize 1-1 in the 14th minute. Girona took the lead again thanks to Savio's goal in the 26th minute and increased the lead to 3-1 through Daley Blind (39') following Artem Dovbyk's assist.

Morata finally scored a hat-trick in the 54th minute and made the score equal at 3-3. This score lasted until injury time in the second half. In these crucial minutes, Ivan Martin emerged as the hero of Girona's victory after his shot could not be blocked by Jan Oblak. The score 4-3 for Girona's victory was the final result of this match.

Real Madrid successfully beat Real Mallorca with a narrow score of 1-0 in the La Liga 2023/2024 weekday19 match which was held at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday. The duel between the two teams was tight and no goals were scored until halftime. Los Blancos had to wait until the final minutes of the second half (78') to score the winning goal through Antonio Rudiger's header. A narrow score of 1-0 still yields three points. Real Madrid may not have played optimally, but they know how to work hard to secure the three points.

Barcelona will only compete on Thursday when they visit Las Palmas, Xavi's squad should be more favoured, but now they have to face pressure. As a result, Barca must win over Las Palmas later to close the gap. Being 10 points behind in the middle of the season is certainly very far, not a favourable situation. If they win, Barca can cut their deficit to seven points. There's still a lot, but at least they have more opportunities to catch up.
