CWI-sanctioned Global Super League set to commence in Guyana
The Cricket West Indies has sanctioned a new five-team T20 competition named the Global Super League set to inaugurate in Guyana and will be played from November 26 to December 7. The league will comprise five sides from five different nations and is entirely supported by the government of Guyana, a key stakeholder in the tournament, which has a reward of US$1 million.
This will be South America’s first and only standalone cricket competition and features Guyana Amazon Warriors from the Caribbean T20 League and four other “established” T20 franchises from around the globe. It is learnt Hampshire, the three-time winners of England’s T20 Blast are among the invited sides.
There will be 11 matches in the Global Super League T20 with each side playing four games in the group phase. The top two sides will then advance to the final. All matches of this T20 tournament will be played at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence. A media release stated that the event is set to be held annually featuring different sides from different parts of the world being invited to participate each season.
"The passion for cricket in Guyana rivals that of fans anywhere, and we look forward to celebrating our love of the game and our rich and vibrant country with both those visiting in person and watching from around the world," Clive Lloyd, the Global Super League chairman was cited via a release.
The 2023 Caribbean T20 League winner, Amazon Warriors, is the home team from Guyana. Besides emerging victorious in 2023, the Warriors have runners-up on six occasions: 2013, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2019 and 2024.
"The Global Super League has the full support of the Government of Guyana as we build a world-class sports tourism product," Mohammed Irfaan Ali, president of the co-operative Republic of Guyana said. "Cricket is part of our cultural history, a unifying force, part of our heritage and an integral part of our strategic objective in economic diversification with a strong emphasis on tourism."
The Global Super League will coincide with the UAE T10 League, scheduled from November 21 to December 2, and with Bangladesh’s tour of the West Indies however what will begin with the Tests from November 22 to December 4, three ODIs from December 8 to 12 followed by three T20Is from 16 to 20.
