Match 5: GUJ vs PUN

Preview 

The fifth game of the Indian T20 League 2025 will see Gujarat (GUJ) take on Punjab (PUN) at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. The hosts finished eighth on the points table last season and will thus be keen to start strongly. On the other hand, Punjab didn’t have it much better and ended the 2024 season 9th on the table. Led by Shreyas Iyer, PUN will aim for a much-improved performance this year.

The two teams have had a close rivalry, with two wins apiece. Both teams will begin their 2025 campaign following a dismal 2024. GUJ being the hosts will look to use the playing conditions to their advantage. The PUN franchise is known for starting poorly in this tournament, and it will be interesting to see how the new-look team performs under a new skipper. 

Shubman Gill and Co would be eager to overcome their abysmal show last season. They struggled with their consistency and failed to reach the playoffs. The bowling prowess had an ordinary 2024, and they have more alternatives in their bowling attack this time. It is their home ground, and the GUJ skipper would like to use the familiarity with the playing surface and commence the campaign on a winning note. 

Shubman Gill and Jos Bulter will stand the proceedings for the home side with the bat. Sai Sudarshan has proved his mettle at three and will likely come out at one down. Shahrukh Khan, Mahipal Lomror, and Washington Sundar will shoulder the middle-order batting responsibility. Glenn Phillips will have the onus to provide the late flourish and finish the innings strongly. 

The bowling attack comprises Kagiso Rabada and Mohammad Siraj, who will likely share the new ball. Rashid Khan will spearhead the spin bowling attack, which also includes Washington Sundar, Glenn Phillips, and Rahul Tewatia. 

Punjab has not made it to the playoffs in the last 10 seasons. Shreyas Iyer, who led KOL to a title last year, will be expected to change the fortunes of this franchise. They will face a difficult challenge against Gujarat, and Iyer expects his side to come all guns blazing and open their account this season. 

Prabhsimran Singh has done well in the last couple of years, and he alongside Vishnu Vinod will look to provide the team with a strong start with the bat. Shreyas Iyer needs to lead from the front in the middle order and build partnerships with Suryansh Shegde. Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, and Shashank Singh will be responsible for the late flurry. 

In the bowling department, PUN will rely on the duo of Marco Jansen and Arshdeep Singh to provide them with the early breakthroughs. Yuzvendra Chahal will lead the spin bowling attack that has Harpreet Brar and Maxwell. Kuldeep Sen and Stoinis will come in handy during the middle overs.
