Inoka Ranaweera Joins Sri Lanka Women's Squad for 2024 World T20 League
Inoka Ranaweera included in Sri Lanka Women's World T20 League 2024 squad
Left-arm spinner Inoka Ranaweera, 38, has been inducted into the Sri Lanka squad for the Women's World T20 League, 2024, replacing 21-year-old seamer Kawya Kavindi. Ranaweera was kept out of the team that won the Women's Asia Cup for Sri Lanka last July and also for the recent Ireland tour.
With the World T20 League scheduled for spin-friendly pitches in UAE, the experience would count even if Ranaweera, who has yet to be as effective in the shortest format this year, goes into the tournament. She boasts an impressive economy of 5.86 from 91 wickets in as many as 82 T20I matches.
It leaves Sri Lanka with only three primary seam options for the tournament: Udeshika Prabodhani, Achini Kulasuriya, and Ama Kanchana, but their spin department looks lethal with Ranaweera playing alongside Inoshi Priyadharshani, Sugandika Kumari, and Kavisha Dilhari, captain Chamari Athapaththu also giving off-spinning options.
Sri Lanka certainly looks unparalleled on the batting front. Besides inspirational Athapaththu, Harshitha Samarawickrama and 18-year-old Vishmi Gunaratne have been in fine fettle lately. Going into Asia Cup winning will give them the much-needed momentum for going for top four in the World T20 League.
The showpiece event begins on October 3. Sri Lanka is in Group A alongside Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, and India.
