Malaga, Nortje ruled out of ODI World Series 2023

Pace bowlers Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala have been ruled out of the forthcoming Men’s World Series in India due to injuries, as validated by Proteas’ white ball coach Rob Walter. Lizaad Williams and Andile Phehlukwayo have been called in as replacements in the 15 man World Series squad.

Fast bowler Nortje has picked a suspected lumbar (lower back) stress fracture. He went through scans and tests after the second ODI against Australia, following lower back spasms.

Magala, who had suffered an injury while playing for the Chennai in the Indian T20 League, complained about a knee niggle in the recently concluded ODI series against Australia, and has not been included in the World Series squad as a preventative measure.

Speaking on the injury blows, Rob Walter said, “It's hugely disappointing for Anrich and Sisanda to be missing out on the 50-over World Series. Both are quality players that add immense value to the Proteas. We sympathise in their omission and will continue to provide all the necessary support as they work towards their return to competitive action.

"This provides an opportunity for Andile and Lizaad on the global stage. Both players have been part of our winter programs as well as having represented South Africa in the recent white-ball tour against Australia. They offer great skill sets and we're excited to have them complete the 15-player squad for this year's World Series."
