Man Utd legend criticises 21-year-old striker
21-year-old striker is even criticized by Man Utd legend: What's so great about him?
Rasmus Hojlund's performance in his first season with Manchester United still hasn't been able to impress 52-year-old Dwight Yorke. Red Devils legend even issued sharp criticism towards Hojlund. The Danish footballer was brought in by United from Atalanta last summer with an initial transfer fee of £64 million ($82m). The 21-year-old forward immediately became a centre on the Red Devils' front line. Hojlund also showed his sharpness on the Champions League stage. However, his performance in the Premier League was not very attractive. He just scored his debut goal in the Premier League on 26 December 2023.
Hojlund's performance since then has been very impressive. He has recorded five goals and two assists in his last six appearances, meaning he has now scored 10 goals in all competitions. Despite his recent good performances, Hojlund still cannot escape criticism. The former Man Utd midfielder, Yorke, has become a figure who has been vocal in criticizing the 21-year-old striker.
"He's still on loan, he still needs time, but I'm happy he managed to score a few goals. That might calm him down," Yorke said. "Another question, what are the advantages? Because I still don't know what the advantages are. Often, when you do your due diligence on a player and you pay £70 million for a player – is he fast, can he head, can he shoot, can he dribble ?"
However, Yorke can understand why Hojlund has so far not been able to live up to his expectations of a goal-hungry striker. He believes that poor support from teammates is the cause. “If you come in, no matter how good you are, how young you are, or how old you are, you're going to struggle in a team that's struggling, it's not consistent,” Yorke explained. "I feel for the kid and I think there are going to be tough times ahead of him," he said.
