A Shift in Clubs, but Donny van de Beek’s Story Endures

Donny van de Beek's adventure in La Liga seems to be not much different from when he played with Manchester United. The Dutch midfielder is now reportedly having difficulty adapting to his new club, Girona. Man United splashed out big money to sign the Dutchman from Ajax in 2020, but he struggled for form before United sold him on a permanent transfer.

Van de Beek made a total of 62 appearances for Man United, producing just two goals and two assists in a hugely disappointing spell in England. The Red Devils offloaded him to Spanish side Girona in July, but even after moving to a smaller club, Van de Beek has struggled to return to his best. According to reports, the 27-year-old midfielder Van de Beek arrived at the Estadi Municipal de Montilivi with physical problems 'due to a lack of playing time at Old Trafford. Van de Beek's problems are not just physical, with the player also having trouble adapting to his new manager Michel's tactics.

The 27-year-old has made four appearances in all competitions for Girona to date, three of them as a substitute in La Liga. Van de Beek was also handed a start in the Champions League against Paris-Saint Germain, playing for 58 minutes before being withdrawn. Meanwhile, speaking earlier this month, Marco van Basten criticised Van de Beek's agent for allowing the midfielder to join Man United in 2020.

"His agent was a bad advisor in that regard. It was too big a step," Van Basten said of Van de Beek's move to Man United. "As an agent, you have to be able to decide I send him to that club because that's where he's going to play. He went to two clubs and didn't play a single game."
