New Zealand tour of Sri Lanka

SL vs NZ, 2nd ODI

Preview

Sri Lanka will cross swords with New Zealand for the second game of the three-match ODI series. The game is scheduled at the Pallekelle Stadium on Sunday, November 16.

In the First ODI, Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis made brilliant run-scoring efforts at the top of the order for the hosts. Their valiant efforts put up a brilliant 324/5 in 49.2 overs before the rain stopped the game. Fernando played a composed innings of 100 off 115 balls, hitting 9 fours and 2 sixes. Yet, Mendis was the show's star, smashing 143 off 128 balls, consisting of 17 fours and 2 sixes. Charith Asalanka came down the order to play a quick-fire innings of 40 off 28 deliveries to help Sri Lanka cross the 300-run mark.

The remaining 17 overs were up for New Zealand, given a revised target of 221 runs in 27 overs due to the DLS method. Openers Will Young and Tim Robinson laid a solid platform with an 88-run opening stand. However, once they were dismissed, the New Zealand innings started leaking wickets at regular intervals. The middle order failed to gain any further momentum, and the team was eventually restricted to 175 for 9, falling 45 runs short.

Pitch Report

The surface has provided enough assistance to the bowlers during the last two games. The batters found it hard to score runs on this pitch, so taking their teams to a big score was difficult. The captain who wins the toss shall choose bowling first and chase down the target later.

The weather forecast for the matchday is partly cloudy, with high and low temperatures of 31 and 21 degrees Celsius, respectively.

Match Prediction

Sri Lanka won the first ODI at the end of Wednesday, but despite scoring huge totals, the Blackcaps openers quickly piled up runs early on. We expect New Zealand to win the match if their middle-order batters work efficiently, just like their openers, in chasing the target. But looking back to their current form, we expect the hosts’ Sri Lanka to win the match, being in their prime form at the moment.
