Man United goalkeeper receiving 135 shots in just 5 matches

Life as Andre Onana will not be easy as Manchester United goalkeeper, the 28-year-old Cameroonian has a heavy burden on and off the field. As Red Devils goalkeeper, Onana will be the first player to be criticized when the team achieves bad results. Meanwhile, when he won, Onana seemed to be walking in a quiet hallway and received minimal praise.

The sixth-placed Man United's Andre Onana's role is very vital to the Red Devils. For instance, in the duel against Liverpool which was played on Sunday(07th April 2024), if it weren't for Onana, United might have lost points during the duel at Old Trafford, the Reds players took 28 shots and United only released nine. If not for the six saves made by the Man United's goalkeeper, they might have conceded more than two goals and lost. In the last five matches in all competitions, United achieved two wins, two draws and one loss. There were nine goals scored against the 13-time Premier League winners, all when Onana was in charge. Not necessarily, If you look at it as a whole, there is something wrong with the way United defends because the team created by Erik ten Hag seemed very easy to allow opponents to take shots.

The proof is, that in just five matches, United has taken 135 shots. The highest number of shots occurred in the duel against Brentford. Even though they only conceded one goal, Man United got 31 shots from the opposing side.

The following is the number of shots received by Man United in the last five matches:

  • Everton - 23 shots
  • Liverpool - 25 shots
  • Brentford - 31 shots
  • Chelsea - 28 shots
  • Liverpool - 28 shots

It's easy to blame Andre Onana when he makes a blunder however, there is another fact that may not be widely highlighted behind the blunders made by the Cameroonian, namely his status as the goalkeeper with the most saves in the Premier League. Until match 32, Andre Onana had made 120 saves in the Premier League and he was one save ahead of Thomas Kaminski, who plays for the relegation zone team, Luton Town.

Goalkeepers at top Premier League clubs are relatively more 'relaxed' compared to Onana. Aston Villa's Emi Martinez only made 81 saves. Meanwhile, David Raya only made 37 saves in 25 matches. It can be fair enough to say that Onana is currently being tested by every team and he needs to prove his worth why Man United has invested so much into him.

10 Goalkeepers with the Most Saves till match 32

  • Andre Onana (Manchester United) - 120
  • Thomas Kaminski (Luton Town) - 119
  • Alphonse Areola (West Ham) - 113
  • Bernd Leno (Fulham) - 112
  • Neto (Bournemouth) - 109
  • Wes Foderingham (Sheffield) - 108
  • James Trafford (Burnley) - 106
  • Mark Flekken (Brentford) - 102
