Safety Concerns: Green Park's C Stand Deemed 'Unsafe' Before India-Bangladesh Test
Green Park's C Stand Declared 'Unsafe' Ahead of India-Bangladesh Test
The oldest structure in the Kanpur stadium, Green Park, has come under question amid the impending India-Bangladesh Test match. The officials from the Uttar Pradesh Public Works Department, who inspected the structure, have demanded that the C Stand section not be used at full spectator capacity as it has been declared unfit. Engineers from Harcourt Butler Technical University toured the stands with the officials. The decision has been made after conducting the safety check.
According to Sanjay Kapoor, the venue director, it is a procedure before major events. "Whenever an event is held, government departments conduct their inspections," he said. "The PWD and HBTU conducted their inspection three days before the match, determining that some seats in C Block are not safe for spectators.".
The C Stand, which has been out of order for some time, can accommodate 4800 fans at its upper tier. According to the PWD report, only 1750 seats would be available, said Kapoor. The lower tier will be full.
Green Park last hosted a Test in 2021 against New Zealand match that will be remembered for the dramatic way fading light cut play short though the lights were put on. Kapoor assured this time that they are all set and ready to go in case they are needed in the opening days of the match, especially as per the weather forecast.
The India-Bangladesh Test gets underway this Friday, 27 September. India aims to win the series, which will be their first test at their home venue in some time after defeating Bangladesh by 280 runs last week in Chennai.
