Sanath Jayasuriya Named As Sri Lanka Cricket Coach For The Next Two-Year Years

Former cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya has been selected as the head coach of the Sri Lankan Men’s senior team on a two-year contract. The Sri Lankan legend served as their interim coach for the series against India, England, and New Zealand. Jayasuriya’s appointment has come into effect from October 1 and will end on March 31, 2026.

The Sri Lankan Cricket Board said in a social media post that “Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce the appointment of Sanath Jayasuriya as the head coach of the national team.

The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket made this decision, taking into consideration the team’s good performances in the recent tours against India, England, and New Zealand, where Jayasuriya was in charge as the ‘interim head coach.”

The appointment came into effect on October 1, 2024, and will remain until March 31, 2026.

During his stint with the team as the interim coach, the Islanders defeated India 2-0 in the ODI series and also beat New Zealand 2-0 in the Test series. The only loss came against England 1-2, but there also, they gave a tough competition.

Sri Lanka’s recent Test series clean sweep against New Zealand cemented their third place on the World Test Series 2023-25 standings. Now, only two teams are ahead of them, India and Australia. The Lankan side are not yet out of the race to make it to the final clash, but for them, the calculation is still tough.
