Shreyas Iyer off the field for second consecutive day

Shreyas Iyer did not come out to field for the second successive day in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy final against Vidarbha at the Wankhede Stadium.

Iyer had scored 95 off 111 balls in Mumbai’s second innings on day three, which helped set  Vidarbha a mammoth target of 538. But he did not come out on the field on Wednesday due to back pain. It is learnt that Iyer took some treatment during the day and was believed to be able to field on Thursday.

He first complained about the back pain after the second Test against the Three Lions, particularly when occupying the crease for long durations. The Indian Cricket Team medical unit upon thorough examination cleared him of any injury during the time, but the selectors omitted him from the squad for the remainder of the series.

Iyer later missed Mumbai’s final Ranji Trophy league match because of back spasms. However, at the moment, he did attend the pre-season camp for Kolkata, the team he will lead at Ind T20 League 2024.

The fact that he had chosen against competing in Ranji Trophy despite not being involved  with international cricket didn’t sit well with the bosses, and Indian Cricket Board secretary Jay Shah handed out a letter to the top players in the nation warning them of “severe implications” if they give Ind T20 League priority over domestic cricket. Iyer then went on to sit out Mumbai’s quarter-final as well, but has made his appearance in the semi final and final. Iyer has also been one of the notable names to be released from the list of centrally contracted players.

Mumbai are currently in a commanding position in the ongoing title contest, having posed Vidarbha a gigantic target of 538.
