Shreyas Iyer is likely to miss IND T20 League and Test Championship Final
Kolkata's skipper Iyer to undergo back surgery: Reports
India's star batter Shreyas Iyer is likely to miss the upcoming edition of the Indian T20 League and the test Championship final due to a back injury, Iyer may have to undergo surgery, due to which he may stay away from cricket for about 5 months. During the fourth Test match played against Australia, Iyer complained of back pain and he did not come out to bat in the first innings of the match.
According to sources, Iyer may have to undergo surgery for his back injury, due to which he will be away from team India for a long time and will also miss the final of the Test Championship to be played at the Oval in London from June 7 against Australia. Speaking to a source said, "Iyer was in touch with the doctor in Mumbai and on the third visit to the doctor, he was advised to undergo surgery." Due to this, he can miss IND T20 League and other important tournaments.
The source further said, “Iyer wants to undergo surgery in London but the consultation for the operation is still going on as Indian Cricket is yet to finalize the location of the operation. There is a possibility that the surgery may be done in India."
Significantly, Iyer's absence will be big implications for IND T20 League franchise Kolkata, who bought the star batter for a whopping sum of Rs 12.25 crores and gave him the charge of the side in 2022.
The 28-year-old prolific Indian batter has played 101 matches in the league scoring 2776 runs with an average strike rate of 31.55 and 125.38 with the highest score of 96. However, Iyer ended the year 2022 as the third-highest run-getter across formats in International cricket by featuring in 39 matches, scoring 1609 runs with an average of 48.75.
It will be a big question for Kolkata who will take charge of the team in his place for the upcoming edition, it will be a matter to be seen. In the last season, under the captaincy of Iyer, 2-time IND T20 League winners won 6 out of 14 matches and lost 8. At the same time, the team finished in the 7th spot in the points table with 12 points.
