Jay Shah is likely to become the Apex Cricket Board Chairman

There is big news about Indian Cricket Board secretary Jay Shah, the 35-year-old Shah can become the new chairman of the Apex Cricket Board replacing the incumbent Greg Barclay. The 62-year-old veteran Barclay told Apex cricket board directors, including Cricket Australia chairman Mike Baird, during a video conference that he has no intention of contesting for the post for the third time. He has taken this decision after being informed about Jay Shah's intention to contest the election in November in his place.

Shah has the support of the cricket boards of England and Australia, he has enough support to be crowned as the head of the Apex Cricket Council. If it is believed in the recent reports, Jay Shah is also ready for this new role. An Apex Cricket board spokesperson told The Age - Apex Cricket Board Chairman Greg Barclay has confirmed to the board that he will not contest for a third term and he will step down from the post when his current term ends at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the independent Apex Cricket Board chairman in November 2020, after which he will be re-elected in 2022.

What is the process, how can Jay Shah become Apex Cricket Board chairman?

The current directors will now have to submit nominations for the next chairman by August 27, 2024, and if there is more than one candidate then the election will take place and the term of the new chairman will start from December 1, 2024. As per Apex Cricket Board rules, the election of the chairman consists of 16 votes and now a majority of 9 votes (51%) is required for the winner. Earlier, the current president needed a two-thirds majority to become the president. Jay Shah has a very good relationship with most of the 16 voting members.

Jay Shah would have to leave the post in the Indian Cricket Board for 3 years after October 2025. At present, Shah has one more year left as Indian Cricket board secretary, after which he will have to go on a mandatory cooling-off period of 3 years from October 2025.
