I was not aware of bowling the Super Over- Washington Sundar

Sri Lanka required nine runs to win off the last two overs in the third and final T20I. The men in blue still had the bowling of Mohammad Siraj to call on (Siraj had given only 11 runs off his first three overs). They also had an over from Khaleel Ahmed, who could have bowled the last over.

But with Kusal Perera still standing firmly, skipper Suryakumar Yadav introduced the part-time spin of Rinku Singh, who had never been seen with the ball in hand in a T20I international. It worked out spectacularly as Perera perished top edging a cross-batted shot. Later in the over he dismissed Ramesh Mendis who was holed out to deep mid-wicket.

Seeing Rinku Singh concede only three runs and pick two wickets in the penultimate over, Suryakumar Yadav decided to bowl his off-spin in the 20th over which paid off as Yadav claimed another two and conceded only five to win the match.

After the game, Washington Sundar, the spin bowling all-rounder in the team described the spell by Surya as “amazing”. There was a lot of purchase for the spinners and Sri Lanka struggled to get bat on ball against the slow bowlers.

"It was amazing from Surya and his leadership skills," Washington said. He felt that given the situation if he bowled more spinners we'd have a good chance to win the game. Given the wicket and the situation, he took one or two options, which did wonders for us.

"There were only 12 balls to go and Kusal Perera was batting. Rinku got him out and Surya himself came on in the last over and almost won the game for us. We all know he has a big heart when he goes out there to bat, but he also has a big heart in leadership as well."

Washington himself then played a critical role, bowling the Super Over in which he conceded only two runs and took two wickets.

"Honestly, I had no idea I was going to bowl. It was after the batsmen walked out that Surya turned behind and said: 'Washy, you're on.' I was very happy, to be honest. When the captain wants you to bowl, especially in tough situations, in a Super Over. I thought it was a great opportunity for me to step up and win games for my country. Thank God it went well."

At one stage Sri Lanka was cruising with 9 wickets in hand. India was struggling to keep the required run rate in check but Kusal Mendis’s wicket triggered yet another batting collapse and the visitors ultimately won the game in the super over.

"Surya kept telling us that one or two wickets, and the game would change," Washington said. "In these kinds of wickets, in low-scoring games, even run-a-ball could be a lot of pressure on the batsmen because there's something for the bowlers in the wicket.

"He said one or two wickets in the middle overs would get us in the game, and that's exactly what happened. I hope the audience enjoyed it because you will only see such games now and then. To be a part of this game feels great."
