World Cup ODI 2023

BAN vs AFG, Match 3

Preview

The opening match of the World Cup ODI 2023 ended in a one-sided battle after Tom Latham-led NZ thrashed Jos Buttler-led ENG by 9 wickets. Thanks to the courtesy of Devon Conway's 152* and Rachin Ravindra's 123* who man-slaughtered the English bowlers at Narender Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad. In the fourth World Cup 2023 Match, Bangladesh will face Afghanistan on Saturday at 10:30 AM IST on 07th October 2023 from Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamshala. The 8th-placed ODI side Bangladesh will be looking to dominate this match against 9th-placed ODI side Afghanistan.

However, Hashmatullah Shahidi-led AFG won its only warm-up game against the Lankan Lions by 6 wickets with 23 balls remaining, and BAN had a decent start. Shakib Al Hasan-led BAN won its first warm-up game against SL by 7 wickets with 8 overs to spare with the courtesy of three top-order batters' performances but the side lost to ENG by 4 wickets in the second warm-up match.

BAN suffered a setback before the start of the warm-up fixtures as their captain Shakib injured his foot during a practice session. But the 36-year-old left-handed all-rounder and the backbone of the side will be available for the first game against AFG. Hashmatullah Shahidi-led AFG recalled Naveen-ul-Haq & Azmatullah Omarzai in the World Cup squad after both missed the Asia ODI series 2023. BAN and AFG played last month against each other in the Asia ODI series match at Lahore. The right-handed batter Mehidy Hasan Miraz (112) & the left-handed opening batter Najmul Hossain Shanto (104) guided BAN to register 334 runs on the scorecard. Bangladesh won the match by 89 runs against AFG after taking 8 wickets against AFG. This was the highest match aggregate (579) involving BAN and AFG in the ODIs.

Both sides have faced each other in 15 matches in ODI. Out of these 15 games, BAN has won 9 matches whereas AFG has won 6 times.

Pitch and Weather Report

The pitch at Dharamshala is historically known for offering assistance to fast bowlers, particularly during the early hours of the match. It has a good grass covering, and the surface tends to be firm, which can provide good bounce and carry to the wicketkeeper.

Bowlers who can extract movement off the seam and exploit the bounce tend to be successful here. However, as the match progresses, the pitch generally becomes flatter and more favourable for batting.

The weather will be sunny and the temperature will range between 19 and 25. The wind will be flowing from the west at 9-11 kmh.

Match Prediction

AFG has lost 14 of their 15 World Cup ODI. The one they have won is against Bangladesh. Though AFG has won three of their last 5 games against Bangladesh, they are going through poor form. Bangladesh are also riding in the same boat, but their chances are higher to win this game. Their top order is in form. And their bowlers, especially pacers, are giving a tough time to the opposition.

If BAN bats first, it will likely be a high-scoring game. It will all come on Rashid Khan who has to take the jump from his poor form to give Bangladesh a hard battle.
