Match 4: SA vs SL 

Preview 

South Africa will open their ODI World Cup 2023 campaign against Sri Lanka on October 7, Saturday. The two teams will lock horns in the fourth match of the competition at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. 

The Proteas have not been at the top of their game over the last few years and thus the expectations are timid this year as well. Adding misery to their limited overs woes, the team looks good all round alternatives while their bowling prowess has also suffered quite a few injury blows with the loss of Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala. However, they are heading into the marquee event after defeating Australia in the five match ODI series 3-2 and will hence walk with their spirits high.   

The hard fought series victory must have given the men in green a world of confidence and they will be hoping to rely on the same. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka also showed signs of promise in the recently concluded Asia ODI Series. 

However, in the ultimate clash against India, the team dished out a ghastly performance and handed a very comfortable win to their opponent. Like South Africa, Sri Lanka are also facing injury crisis with their premium speedster Dushmantha Chameera and spin wizard Wanindu Hasaranga missing a few games. Notably, they enjoyed a successful run in the Qualifiers and powered their way to the World Cup.

Prior to Saturday’s clash, both SA and SL competed in two warm up games to get familiar with the Indian pitches and the playing conditions. The former champions failed to get a result in their favour, as they struggled across the two matches. In their first outing, they lost to Bangladesh and were then dazed by Afghanistan in the following warm up game. 

As far as SA are concerned, their opening warm up game against Afghanistan was washed out due to appalling weather conditions. In the next game, they suffered a narrow 7 run defeat against the Black Caps in a run affected game via DLS method.

Match Prediction

Both teams have some quality players in their ranks. While SA will bank on the likes of Quinton De Kock,Aiden Markram and Rassie Van Der Dussen to deliver the goods with bat in hand, Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen and Tabraiz Shamsi will shoulder the bowling responsibility. 

Sri Lanka on the other hand will count on Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka to do majority of scoring with the bat and the onus of picking wickets will be on the Matheesha Pathirana and Dunith Wellalage  

Expect an evenly poised duel between these highly competitive sides. The men in green will slightly have an edge due to the experience within the side. We predict the Proteas to win this encounter.
