Yamal and Gavi lead Barcelona to the finals with a 2-0 win over Atheltic Bilbao
Lamine Yamal and Pablo Gavi scored the goals as FC Barcelona needed to defeat Athletic Bilbao 2-0 and reach the Spanish Super Cup final on Wednesday (January 8, 2025).
Gavi scored in the 17th minute of the semi-final. This was his first goal since the midfielder returned to action in October after a serious leg injury that sidelined him for nearly a year.
The Spaniard then helped his compatriot, Lamine Yamal, score the second goal in the 52nd minute with a pass that the star kid controlled while whirling towards the goal. Yamal got past goalkeeper Unai Simon to give his home side a two-goal lead.
The defending champions, Real Madrid, will play Mallorca in the other semi-final, which will also be played on Thursday in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The final game will be played on Sunday.
Yamal didn’t disclose the opponent he would prefer for the final game, saying, “The final will be tough, and we want to win it; that is the important thing.”
Athletic could rarely threaten the Blaugrana side, as they were behind two goals. Inaki Williams thought he scored a goal in the game's final minutes, but it was ruled off after a VAR found him offside.
With this defeat, Ernesto Valverde's side ended a 15-game unbeaten streak across all competitions.
